The gift of this painting is recorded in a full page entry in the 'Book of Benefactors'. A modern translation of the Latin reads 'The resident members of St Edmund Hall, approving and encouraging the generosity of the most worthy Principal, Anthony Grayson, and desiring to adopt his cause as their own, have decided that a portrait of the Reverend John Hill, Vice-Principal of the same Hall for 28 years as well as tutor of very many of them in their studies, should be painted and placed in the refectory, AD 1840'.
