This small oil study shows the riverbank at Asnières, a suburb of Paris on the river Seine. In the background we see the Courbevoie bridge and behind it the factories of Clichy. Throughout his life Seurat worked in the traditional academic way making drawings and sketches for his large paintings. 'The Riverbanks' is one of many tiny sketches he made for his first large-scale composition, 'Bathers at Asnières' (1884) at the National Gallery, London.
