In 2023 Professor Jeanne Nuechterlein (University of York) proposed Marten van Cleve as the probable answer to the mystery of who painted 'The Road to Calvary', having found what appears to be a preparatory drawing for the painting in the Teylers Museum in the Netherlands (object no. KT 2015 020). Professor Nuechterlein has also tentatively dated the painting to c.1565.
