The stock market crashed in 1825 and many banks failed soon after. Rolinda Sharples set her narrative in a fictional 'Guinea Street' although several of the buildings here are based on ones in Bristol, particularly in Corn Street. Sharples chose the subject because it was 'well suited to a great variety of expression' in the many people who had rushed to the bank demanding their capital, and were now financially ruined. She exhibited the painting in London in 1827 but later worked on it again.
