Born at Dunvant, Richards went to nearby Swansea School of Art (1921–1924). He spent the next three years in London, where he studied at the Royal College of Art, and also attended Bernard Meninsky’s evening classes in life drawing at Westminster School of Art. His early work took the form of reliefs, constructions and assemblages, inspired by Picasso as well as the Surrealist Exhibition held in London in 1936. Richards ran the painting department at Cardiff School of Art from 1940 until 1944, and also did illustration work, both for the Ministry of Information, and the poetry of Dylan Thomas. This resulted in a series of paintings and prints related to the author, and other writers such as Vernon Watkins. He also worked as a stage designer, his projects including commissions for operas by Lennox Berkeley and Benjamin Britten.
