This is one of a series of 39 paintings produced by Stephen Chaplin based upon his memories of his childhood during the Second World War in Orpington. This shows Mr Emery, a tall thin, elderly man, arriving by 'sit-up-and-beg' bicycle for duty at the wardens' Main Post. He was the only full timer. The post was composed of a shed at the top of a shaft with a vertical ladder down to a shelter used for working and sleeping down underground.
