William Hogarth made his name as a painter, engraver, critic and writer. 'The Wedding Banquet' was to form part of a series entitled 'The Happy Marriage'. This was a projected series of six paintings, possibly intended as the antidote to the earlier 'Mariage à la mode'. 'The Happy Marriage' was, however, abandoned and only three of the paintings survive, unfinished and dispersed.
