Copied by Teniers after an unfinished picture by Titian (q.v.; Vienna, Kunshistorisches Museum) and engraved by I. Troÿen in 1660 for the Theatrum Pictorium (see also P635–636 and P638). The collection was kept in the château of Coudenberg, Brussels, which Teniers evoked in a number of fanciful views of the Archduke’s picture gallery. The views in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, in the Prado, Madrid and at Petworth and Woburn all include the original of the present picture. The copy belonged to Joseph Bonaparte, King of Spain (1808–1813) and to Anatole Demidoff, Prince of San Donato, before its purchase by the 4th Marquess of Hertford.
