Harold Knight was born in Nottingham, the son of a successful architect. He was a student at the Nottingham School of Art where he met fellow artist Laura Johnson, his future wife. 'The Young Seamstress' was painted during the year the Knights moved from Staithes, North Yorkshire where they were part of an artists’ colony and is one of Harold Knight’s early studies of women in interiors, possibly a study for submission to the Royal Academy in 1907.
