The portrait type is identical to the bronze relief dated 1857 (NT 263585) and the cast iron portrait of Carlyle by Thomas Woolner (NT 263804), after Woolner’s portrait medallion made in 1855. Possibly by the cameo engraver James Ronca, who copied a number of Thomas Woolner's portrait medallions and exhibited them at the Royal Academy between 1865 and 1871. James Ronca's uncle lived next door to Jane and Thomas Carlyle at 6 Cheyne Row, and it was this address that James gave as his home address on the occasion of his marriage in 1852.
