Thomas Newbould was the colliery general manager for Earl Fitzwilliam from 1886 until his retirement in 1921. When he retired, Earl Fitzwilliam presented him with this portrait on behalf of the officials and workmen at Elsecar and New Stubbin collieries. David Jagger was the younger brother of the famous sculptor Charles Sargeant Jagger, two of whose sculptures are also in this exhibition. David was a well-known artist in his own right. He painted royalty including Queen Mary and Prince Phillip. His painting of Prince Phillip was left unfinished when Jagger died, and is now displayed at Sheffield’s Cutler’s Hall. Possibly his most famous painting is of Scout leader, Robert Baden-Powell. It is now in the office of the Chief Scout at one of the Scouts’ activity centres.
