This three-quarter-length portrait of the physician Thomas Sydenham depicts him in a dark ornamented outfit with wide-frilled lace cuffs and a lace bib. His hands are elegantly posed on his body, the right holding a thin pole. He has a slightly receding hairline and shoulder-length hair. Sydenham fought for Parliament throughout the English Civil War, and later became the undisputed master of the English medical world, known as 'The English Hippocrates’.
