T. P. Flanagan is considered one of the most important and influential landscape painters of his generation. Born in Enniskillen he first studied art with Kathleen Bridle. In 1948 he enrolled at the Belfast College of Art where his fellow students included Basil Blackshaw and Cherith McKinstry. On graduating he taught briefly at the Convent of the Sacred Heart of Mary, Castle Street, Lisburn before becoming a lecturer in art at St Mary's College of Education, Belfast where he remained for 28 years. He began exhibiting in 1958 and had his first solo exhibition in 1961. Later he became president of the Royal Ulster Academy and a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy. He was awarded an honorary doctorate of fine art from the University of Ulster in 2010.
