Will Maclean was born in Inverness into a family of fishermen, and served in the Merchant Navy for a number of years. His work often reflects on and explores Scottish seafaring history. Maclean was appointed lecturer at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and made Professor of Fine Art in 1994. He was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1997. He has exhibited widely since 1967 both in Britain and internationally.

‘Time and Tide’ is an example of how Maclean creates works from objects found on the shore. This piece examines the traditions of navigation used by fishermen. Maclean often explores many themes of Highland culture and historical traditions, particularly skills lost in modern society.
