This is a second version/copy or 'autographed replica' of a painting by the same title by the same artist (Allan Stewart), which was shown at the Royal Academy in 1896 (No. 472). That work was gifted to the people of Rhodesia in 1898 by George Cawston, a board member of the British South Africa Company. It hung in the Bulawayo City Hall for many years but now cannot be traced. The RCAGM painting was acquired by Sir Merton Russell-Cotes between 1897 and 1921. The purchase or commissioning of such 'autographed replicas' by Sir Merton was common if he could not actually get the original work.
