The painting is a large-scale portrait of the former college principal. It may appear to be a photograph at first but the artist wants us to look very closely and wants to challenge our assumptions about reality in our fast, image-hungry age.

It was commissioned by the Trustees of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig to honour Norman Gillies’ contribution to the development of Gaelic language and culture from 1983 to 2008.
