This view across Torbay to Berry Head is from the grounds of Ehrenberg Hall. The Hall was one of three large villas built in 1860 on the site of what is now the Riviera Centre. For 15 years it was home to Baroness Angela Burdett-Coutts, who inherited a fortune and used her money to fund missionary work abroad. She was also a great supporter of the Torquay Natural History Society and the excavations at Kents Cavern.

The artist Hodges was a London-based portraitist, who painted occasional landscapes.
