Frank Bowling left Guyana for England in the late 1940s and graduated from the Royal College of Art. In 1966 he moved to New York where his work became more abstract and concerned with colour and composition. Bowling's paintings became larger and he abandoned the easel, preferring to pin his canvases to the studio walls or floor.

Traingone evokes an air of solitude and loss as the round shape of the train is seen disappearing to one side of the picture. Mahaicony Abary was a leper colony where many people could hear the sounds of the train in the distance but could never leave because of their condition.
