This foreshortened, full-length figure is viewed from an elevated position although we seem to still look him in the eye. This slight feeling of vertigo is increased by the fractured and disjointed use of different planes (flat surfaces) set at various angles to portray what would normally be the soft rounded form of a figure. The darkly clad figure sits uneasily against the red and black background. This conventionally modern portrait of the 1950s poses a number of questions. Who is 'Ugo'? Why is the figure stood in this vaguely uncomfortable and hostile setting, with slouched and drooping shoulders, wearing an ill fitting jacket? His expression is thoughtful and distracted with something of a faraway look in his eyes. Is the man troubled, pensive or confused? Whatever his thoughts and feelings he appears to be absentmindedly taking a cigarette out of a packet.
