This is the second from a series of paintings made by Gavin Jantjes at the West Indian Association Club in Coventry. The painting shows 'coffin ships'. The ships carrying slaves to America were called coffins because many of the slaves died on the journey.

The painting refers to the 'triangular' slave trade of the 1700s and early 1800s. Ships left Europe for Africa carrying goods and money. In West Africa European traders bought slaves and packed them shoulder to shoulder on the lower decks of their ships. The ships were called coffins because many of the slaves died during the voyage to the Caribbean. On arrival the traders sold the slaves to work on sugar plantations. The ships brought the sugar back to Europe where it made a lot of money.
