Gavin Jantjes is a black artist who uses his work to make a statement about the reality of slavery. This is the first from a series of paintings he made at the West Indian Association Club in Coventry. In this painting an imprisoning circle of white stakes descends. In the centre is an anvil which was used in the process of hammering leg irons onto enslaved black people. The painting refers to the 'triangular' slave trade of the 1700s and early 1800s. Ships left Europe for Africa carrying goods and money. In West Africa European traders bought slaves and packed them shoulder to shoulder on the lower decks of their ships. Many of the slaves died during the voyage to the Caribbean. On arrival the traders sold the slaves to work on sugar plantations.
