In this painting Bernard Cohen explores ways of creating a spatial and pictorial experience. The juxtaposition of short, grey, angular lines with shapeless red and black forms suggests a sense of the process of change and movement.
Cohen is known mainly as an abstract painter and abstract forms have always allowed him to express his responses to the world in rich and imaginative terms. He has commented that in combining two different types of shape such as those in this painting, he could create an overall image that was new and unique.

In 1988 Cohen was appointed Professor and Director of the Slade School of Fine Art.
