Bet Low studied at the Glasgow School of Art from 1942–1945 and initially worked for the Glasgow Unity Theatre, painting and designing some of the theatre sets. By the early 1960s, she was experimenting with abstraction and much of her own work from this period drew inspiration from nature; the effect of water passing over pebbles and stones, or sunlight penetrating a darkened wood.
