One of the many 'strong women' paintings that emerged from the later years of the nineteenth century. Sandys was born in Norwich and was closely linked to the Pre-Raphaelite artists of the Victorian age.

'The Valkyrie and the Raven', a woodcut by Joseph Swain after Frederick Sandys (Royal Academy collection) is dated 1862.
