The skyline shows the steeple in the left centre distance and the eighteenth-century Banff Castle mansion to the right. The policies of Duff House on the far side of the River Deveron are separated from the town by a high wall; the coach and horses are following the approach drive to Duff House from Banff Bridge. The curious feature of this painting is that Banff Bridge did not exist in the year it was painted. The original Banff Bridge, built in 1765, was swept away in 1768. The new Banff Bridge was completed in 1779, four years after James Wales painted his view of Banff.
