The awesome castle at Valckhof in Nijmegen is not only picturesque but redolent with history. Dating back to Roman times, it gained fame later, notably when rebuilt as a palace first by Charlemagne in c.777, and secondly by Frederick Barbarossa in 1155. Today only the ruins of two chapels remain, as the States of Gelderland demolished the site in 1769. Fortunately, it was a popular subject for artists before its demolition, and their pictures serve as historic records as well as artistic productions.

Berckhout is not a well-known artist, and we cannot be sure if he produced this painting after visiting Valckhof himself. He may have drawn on the work of other painters. The work of Jan van Goyen seems to have been a particular inspiration for its style and mood.
