This painting shows a view of Rotherham from Bow Bridge where the River Don meets the River Rother. The building in the foreground is the Wheathill Foundry. The industrial chimneys in the background are part of one of the many pottery businesses which thrived in Rotherham during this period. Cowen painted a number of similar views of towns in his native Yorkshire. This painting is one of the few where the industrial side of town life is shown, rather than just looking at an idyllic scene.
