A grey granite memorial in the form of a pylon penetrated by an arch, beneath which is a bronze cross overlaid with a crusader’s sword. Bronze figures are positioned on a raised platform on the north and south side of the arch: 'Peace Restraining War' is represented by a seated female figure who is gripping the arms of a kneeling male warrior; 'Peace Seeing the Horrors of War' depicts a female figure raising her hands in anguish, as the now dead warrior lies prostrate in her lap. A. J. Hope was a member of Bolton’s best-known firm of architects, Bradshaw Gass and Hope. Following various delays, the statues were finally installed in 1932, and unveiled on 11th November 1932.
