A carved wooden figure of a Chinese deity, possibly Wen Chang, holding a pointed pen or scribe above his head in his left hand. The figure is carved from natural wood bark with a grimacing face emerging from the bark and possibly holding an ink pot in his right hand. The right hand extends outward and toward his left side. The figure has black painted or beaded pupils. His right leg is extended outward and to the right. The base of the figure has a long, carved pole which probably inserts into a larger piece of sculpture. This piece forms part of a Chinese sculpture in the form of a tree with deity figures and birds.
