Wesley Stoker Barker Woolhouse was an actuary, mathematician, designer, writer and musical theorist, and Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. Born in North Shields, at the age of 13 he won a national mathematics competition, competing against adults. He was Deputy Secretary of the Nautical Almanac (1830–1837) and in 1844 became the editor of 'The Lady's and Gentleman's Diary', continuing in that role until 1865. In 1948 he was a co-founder of the Institute of Actuaries. His main achievement was in the field of musical theory, and his book 'Essays on Musical Intervals, Harmonics and the Temperament of the Musical Scale' (1835) is still the subject of debate among musicologists today. This is one of two portraits of Woolhouse by James Shotton in the Collection.
