This painting depicts the 'Baffin Fair' of 1830 when 19 British whaling vessels were crushed in pack ice, including two Peterhead vessels, the 'Hope' and the 'Resolution'. In the ensuing breakdown of ship discipline, crews set fire to wrecked ships and salvaged rum casks. The men became drunk, ran loose on the ice, played games and danced to music. Surprisingly, only about eight or ten men lost their lives and the remainder were eventually taken aboard the surviving vessels.
