Portrait of William Donne, Surgeon. From a family who had farmed in Norfolk since the fourteenth century, his father was a doctor in Dereham and his cousin was William Cowper, the poet. He performed 173 lithotomy operations in 32 years with a mortality rate of one in seven, a remarkable acheivement for the time. He inspired Sir Astley Cooper to take up surgery.
