Maclaren donated £10,000 to buy and develop Gilwell Park for The Scout Association and his generosity is remembered by having his tartan on the Gilwell Scarf. Maclaren owned a publishing company, rubber plantations and was a Scout District Commissioner for Rosneath in Dunbartonshire.
