William Harding came from a Warwickshire family. He went to India as a civil servant in the East India Company.

James Northcote was born in Plymouth and was apprenticed to fellow Devonian, Sir Joshua Reynolds in London. He had a successful career as a portraitist, mainly of middle class sitters.
