Originally from Derby, Ansell moved to London in 1897 and set up practice in 1904. He was elected an Associate member of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1900, followed by a Fellow in 1922 and acted as Chairman of the Board of Architectural Education from 1931–1934, Vice-President 1933–1935, Hon. Secretary 1938–1940 and President 1940–1943. He was President of the Architectural Association in 1928. From 1934 to 1949, he was in partnership with A. Bailey. Ansell's principle works include National Deposit Friendly Society, Queen Square, London.
