Edwin Long was born at Kelston near Bath. As a young man he became very well established as a local portrait painter, and was commissioned to paint portraits of mayors, which hang in the Guildhall to this day. He settled in London in 1858 and had a highly successful career as a painter of historical subjects and portraits, accumulating enough wealth to commission Norman Shaw to build him two houses in Hampstead. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and was made a full Academician in 1881.

Mayor of Bath, William Hunt went to Paris as representative of the city and was presented to the Emperor and Empress of France.
