This is a charming group portrait of William Templer Pole (1782–1847), 7th Baronet, Mary Ann (Marianne) Pole (b.1783), and John George Pole (1787–1803) They were the children of Sir John William Pole (1757–1799), 6th Baronet (who later added ‘de la’ to the name), and Anne Templer (d. 1832), Lady de la Pole (who the artist also painted individually).

The sitters are standing in a landscape with Shute House (now Shute Barton, a property in the care of the National Trust), their family home at the time of the painting.

The artist signed and dated his work on the cricket bat behind the family.
