William Munk (1816–1898) was the son of an ironmonger from Sussex. After studying to become a Doctor of Medicine he obtained various hospital appointments in London and was physician to the Smallpox Hospital. He was regarded as an authority on smallpox in his day and his plea for the wider use of narcotics to relive pain attracted much attention. Munk is chiefly remembered as a historian and as Harveian Librarian at the Royal College of Physicians. From 1861 Munk compiled and published a series of biographies for all RCP Fellows dating back to the College’s foundation in 1518 (and also Licentiates up to 1825). Harveian Librarians since have continued the series and it is commonly referred to as 'Munk’s Roll'. Today the RCP has a near-complete collection of obituaries, making it a valuable biographical resource for medical and social history and family historians.
