The sitter was a merchant adventurer and local benefactor, giving financial support to a number of guilds including the Shoemakers and Bakers. Here he is depicted in three-quarter view wearing clothing that probably dates to the early 1600s.

At each corner of the painting, clockwise from the top left, is a coat of arms with a corresponding motto. These represent his family, 'I breed him'; the Merchant Adventurers, 'But I fedd him'; the Salters Company, 'I made him free'; and his merchant’s mark, 'Yet knowne by mee'. The central panel was painted by an unknown artist, the left and right hand panels were painted by Lovibond using a portrait now hanging in the Salisbury Guildhall for reference.
