This intimate double portrait of the Ames sisters is typical of the work of the society painter, James Sant. Winifred Ames married John Orr RA in 1883.

The painting is one of a group of five portraits transferred in 1978 to English Heritage by descendants of the Cadogan and Ames family of Brinkburn Priory. The Manor House where they once hung is no longer furnished, and all the Ames portraits are in store.

James Sant was a highly successful and prolific society portrait painter and was appointed 'Principal Painter in Ordinary to Her Majesty' in 1871, about the time this portrait was completed.
