Southampton artist Vera Stokes completed this triptych while she was a student at the Southampton Institute. She said: "My fellow students and I were preparing work to take to our Degree Selection Boards and it was against a background that some of us would be winners and some losers that my work evolved." Since that time she says she has spent many happy hours at Salisbury Racecourse sketching and photographing horses and riders. The left-hand panel of the triptych is of a horse and rider jumping over an obstacle and falling, whilst the rest of the field surge past them. The middle panel depicts the horses and riders during the middle or near the end of the race. The right panel shows the triumphant horse and rider/owners with the rest of the field running on.
