Henry Young Alison attended the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) as a student from 1905–1912. He returned to the GSA as a member of staff in 1928 and by 1932 he had been appointed as Evening School and General Course Supervisor. Between 1945 and 1946 he accepted the role of Interim-Director of the GSA prior to the appointment of a new director, Douglas Percy Bliss. In later years Alison concentrated his efforts on own his painting and this work dates from that period.

This painting was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 23rd May 2014.
