This 19th century Dutch scene follows a style that had changed little over the previous 200 years. The big open sky of the picture fills the scene with light. Snowy paths form a slanting cross shape, which leads the viewer's eye into the distance. Winter scenes were popular with Dutch collectors. This picture is painted in the style of Andreas Schelfout, who specialised in snow scenes. Like many small Dutch paintings of this period, it is painted on wood rather than canvas.
