William Bradley Lamond was born in Newtyre, near Dundee. He was not formally trained and spent many years working the Caledonian Railway. Lamond initially focused on portraiture but later concentrated on landscape and coastal scenes. He became a member of the Royal Society of British Art in 1906 and exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and the Glasgow Institute of Fine Art. The composition of this painting is very reminiscent of the iconic painting ‘Whistler’s Mother’ by James Macneill Whistler.
