This is one of van der Heyden’s rare paintings that is exclusively landscape. Only two of van der Heyden’s landscape paintings are dated, both from the late 1660s. The work shows a scene in the woods, close to an unpaved road running through the background.

Several deer are visible, resting in the shadow of the trees or standing, highlighted by the sun. The microscopic detail van der Heyden mastered through his study of townscapes is clearly visible in this small scene of nature. The trees have visibly separate leaves and even clouds have clear cut outlines.
