The domestic interior was a favourite theme for Bonnard. The model depicted here is Marie Boursin, known as Marthe, whom Bonnard was to marry in 1925. She appeared in many of his canvases, including most famously in a series of bathing compositions. Here, however, she is shown seated on a sofa, caught in a moment of suspended animation eating grapes. The pictures decorating the wall and the desk piled with papers and books in the background add to the air of informal domesticity.
