Michael taught both academic and studio-based students for many years at Manchester School of Art and he has published widely on British and European art of the modern period; including books on Goya, Monet, Cézanne and, most recently, a study of his wife's work – Ghislaine Howard: the Human Touch. His book, L. S. Lowry: A Visionary Artist, remains the benchmark for any serious consideration of the artist. He is currently working on the first major publication on Theodore Major and, together with the composer, Peter Byrom-Smith, an opera, The Good Lady Ducayne, based on a short story by Mary Elizabeth Braddon. Its tag line is simple: 'Before Dracula – there was the Good Lady Ducayne!'
