Art UK uses the terms 'queer', 'genderqueer', 'non-binary' and 'gender variant' when discussing sexuality and gender. We have approached gender identity and LGBTQ+ charities for advice in consolidating our editorial policy.

'Queer' is used as an inclusive umbrella term, encompassing any sexual orientation or identity which does not conform to conventional heterosexual norms. From the mid-1980s onwards, many have reclaimed the word as a neutral descriptor. However, some still consider it a pejorative term.

We welcome discussion on the use of inclusive terminology on Art UK. If you have any questions or comments, please email
