In 1989, aged 77, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham made the first of four visits to Lanzarote. Initially she explored the whole island, making drawings and taking photographs, and recording the rich variety of landscapes she encountered. The dramatic volcanic craters, the strange conic hills and cooled lava flows particularly captured her imagination and career-long interest in geological forms.
Over the five years she visited the island she produced well over 100 works in a wide variety of media, including, following her first visit, this wonderful acrylic on paper La Geria, Lanzarote No. 3, 1989 (BGT1178).
