The Fruit Sorters is a modern composition but references earlier cultures. The female figures are modelled on caryatids – stone figures which supported ancient Greek temple architecture. The male figure also resembles ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, which the artist had seen at the British Museum.
Mark Gertler was born in London to Austrian-Jewish parents. He was initially a stained-glass apprentice but in 1909 entered the Slade School of Art in London. Gertler's early works are an intimate reflection on his Jewish roots and throughout his career his paintings incorporate an extraordinary range of still lifes, portraits, nudes and landscapes.
